Chaloklum is a working fishing village, which means one thing for dinner: the seafood is about as fresh as it gets. Here is where the locals and long-stayers actually eat, from the pier to the beach.
You will not find a glossy restaurant strip here, and that is the charm. The food in Chaloklum is honest and close to the source, with a much-loved family table, one genuinely special dinner room and a surprising amount of Italy mixed in. A quick note before you go: small island kitchens change with the seasons, so it is always worth a glance at Google Maps before heading out.
Fresh seafood at the pier
The boats land their catch on the Chaloklum waterfront, and the seafood restaurants sit right where it comes in. Phorn Restaurant is the long-standing local favourite on the pier, doing fresh calamari, prawns, whole fish and Thai curries with a view over the bay. It is the place most people mean when they say "the good seafood in Chaloklum". For a second opinion, Nong Nook Seafood is the family-run mainstay a little further along the waterfront, where the whole family gets involved and the whole grilled snapper with house naam jim comes at honest village prices.
The Sunday night market
On Sunday evenings the pier turns into a small street-food market: grilled fish, seafood, pad thai and the usual island sweets, mostly in the 50 to 150 baht range. It is the most relaxed way to eat fresh-off-the-boat seafood, and a lovely way to spend a Sunday night by the water.
The family table: The Magic Carpet
Every village has one place the locals quietly protect, and in Chaloklum it is The Magic Carpet. Family-owned and run, it is the kind of kitchen where the cooking tastes like someone's home rather than a menu, generous plates made with real care, and regulars who greet the family by name. It spreads by word of mouth rather than advertising, which on a small island is the best recommendation there is. Go hungry.
The special-occasion room: Beach Garden
When the evening calls for something finer, Beach Garden is Chaloklum's genuinely upscale table: a garden setting right on the beach beside the pier, mixing French technique with fresh Thai produce, plus a sushi bar. Think gourmet steak, tiger prawns and cheese platters built on ingredients flown in from France, eaten with your feet more or less in the sand. It is where the village goes for anniversaries.
A surprising amount of Italy
For a small fishing village, Chaloklum has a remarkable Italian bench:
- Cucina Italiana: chef Jenni's beachfront pizzeria has been overlooking the bay for more than two decades and is regularly called the best pizza on Koh Phangan. Evenings only, and closed Wednesdays.
- Ristorante Rimini: an owner-chef from the Romagna Riviera doing homemade pasta and local seafood, mussels, clams and grilled king prawns, in a dinner-only garden. Arrive before seven or the tables are gone.
- Suncafe: an Italian couple baking daily in the heart of the village, with 48-hour sourdough wood-fired pizza, fresh pasta, pastries and proper espresso. The daytime counterpart to the dinner spots.
Cafés & brunch by the bay
For coffee, breakfast and slow mornings, Kaif Phangan is the beachfront café-deli in the heart of the village: eggs benedict, sandwiches, homemade cakes, cheese and cold cuts, plus wine and cocktails later in the day. It is a favourite for brunch and a laptop session by the bay. For a wholesome breakfast or lunch in the village centre, Carrot Cafe is a cosy family-run spot near the 7-Eleven: avocado toast, hummus plates, hearty soups and a strong line in vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Burgers done properly
The village's cult favourite, Mythai Burgers, is a family-run spot on a quiet back street where everything is made in-house: hand-formed patties (beef, lamb, salmon or tofu), home-baked brioche buns and homemade sauces, at prices that make it a weekly habit rather than a treat. Regularly named the best burger on the island.
