Koh Phangan sits beside the best diving in the Gulf of Thailand, and the north coast is its gateway. Here is what to dive, where to snorkel from the sand, and when whale sharks pass through.
People come to Koh Phangan for the beaches and stay for what is under the water. The island's north, around Chaloklum, is the closest launch point to the region's headline dive site, which makes this coast a quiet favourite for divers.
Sail Rock (Hin Bai)
Sail Rock is the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, a granite pinnacle that rises from around 40 metres on the seabed to break the surface. Its signature feature is "the chimney", a vertical swim-through inside the rock that you ascend from depth toward the light near the top. Expect dense schools of barracuda and trevally, moray eels, turtles, and some of Southeast Asia's best whale-shark odds.
It sits between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and Chaloklum is the closest departure point on the island, with boats typically leaving around 8am. The shallow top of the pinnacle suits Open Water divers, while the depth and the chimney give Advanced divers more to explore.
Dive shops in Chaloklum
Chaloklum has been the island's dive-trip village for decades. Established, well-reviewed operators include:
- Chaloklum Diving: a PADI 5-Star centre running since 1995, with a small-group focus and the full range from Discover Scuba to Divemaster.
- Sail Rock Divers: established 2007, a PADI 5-Star Career Development Centre with courses up to Instructor, plus an on-site pool and accommodation.
- Asia Blue Scuba: one of the island's largest operators, with its own boats and daily dive and snorkel trips to Sail Rock.
Snorkelling from the shore
You do not need to dive to see the reef. The two best shore-snorkelling spots are both in the north:
- Koh Ma, Mae Haad: Koh Phangan's only marine park, reached by a sandbar that emerges at low tide so you can walk across and snorkel from the beach. The best coral is on the west and northwest side.
- Haad Khom (Coral Bay): just east of Chaloklum, one of the few beaches where you can snorkel straight off the sand. Head out toward the buoys for the healthier outer reef.
Best season & visibility
The best diving runs roughly March to October, with visibility often 15 to 30 metres. Whale-shark odds peak around March to June, with a second window around August to October. Seas are roughest and visibility lowest in the late-year monsoon. As a rule of thumb, sightings are never guaranteed, so treat the season windows as best odds rather than a promise.
