Things to do in Chaloklum & north Koh Phangan

The north of Koh Phangan is the island's calm, green side: fishing boats instead of full-moon crowds, world-class diving a short boat ride away, hidden beaches and jungle waterfalls. Here is how to spend your days.

Most visitors only see the south of Koh Phangan. The north, around Chaloklum, is where the island slows down, and it happens to sit beside some of the best nature in the Gulf of Thailand. Whether you are here for a week or thinking about living here, this is the local's shortlist.

Dive or snorkel Sail Rock

Sail Rock (Hin Bai) is the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand, a granite pinnacle rising from around 40 metres to break the surface, famous for its vertical swim-through "chimney" and some of the region's best whale-shark odds. It sits between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and Chaloklum is the closest departure point on the island. Trips run with operators like Chaloklum Diving and Sail Rock Divers. We cover this in full in our diving and snorkelling guide.

Walk to Bottle Beach

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) is the postcard: a remote white-sand cove backed by jungle, with no road access. Take a longtail taxi boat from Chaloklum pier (around 20 to 30 minutes) or hike the coastal trail from near Haad Khom. It is the kind of beach that still feels like a discovery.

Chase a waterfall

Inland, the island turns to jungle and waterfalls. Phaeng Waterfall is the largest, with a steep climb to the Dom Sila viewpoint, though it runs low in the dry season, so visit after rain. Than Sadet, on the east side, holds water year round and has granite pools you can swim in, set in a national park once visited by Thai royalty.

Spend a morning at the fishing pier

For a slower kind of day, the Chaloklum pier itself is the attraction: longtail boats, the daily catch coming in, and seafood restaurants right on the bay. It is the most authentically local corner of the island, and our Chaloklum restaurants guide covers where to eat.

Hike Khao Ra

For the island's best view, the Khao Ra hike climbs to Koh Phangan's highest peak, a couple of hours up through jungle to a panorama over the north coast and Chaloklum Bay. It is the kind of half-day adventure you can do straight from the north and be back at the bay by lunch.

"This is the side of Koh Phangan people fall in love with, and then quietly decide to stay."
